Both "ser" and "estar" correspond to the English verb "to be." However, they're used differently. For instance, "ser"can be used to describe the characteristics of someone or something. "Estar", instead, is used to describe the condition of something or someone at the moment (feeling, emotions, etc.) and to tell location of people or things that can move.
For example
"Eu sou brasileira" (I'm Brazilian)
"Eu estou com frio" (I'm cold)
