Lesson focus

"I don't understand" is a very useful phrase because most of the time-maybe even all of the time-it will be the truth! There is an adjustment period during which your ears will have to get used to Portuguese.
And in Portuguese, "I don't understand" is Eu não entendi.
Eu não entendi.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Eu não entendi.
And one time fast: Eu não entendi.
The first word, eu, means "I."
Eu
Eu
This is followed by não, which in Portuguese is both "no" and "don't."
Não
Não
Then lastly, we have entendi, which means "understood."
Entendi
Entendi
So all together, we have Eu não entendi. Literally, this means "I no understood," which sounds funny in English, but it's perfectly correct in Portuguese.
Cultural Insights
It's very normal when you are having a conversation for the other person to stop and ask Entendeu? This literally means "Did you understand?" or "Are you following me?" Naturally, you would respond with a "yes," which by the way, in Portuguese, is sim.
Sim
Sim
I learned this phrase, as well as how to use it, over the course of one hour from one lady who kept asking "Entendeu? Blah blah blah blah, Entendeu?" so frequently that I've never forgotten it.

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so boa sorte!
