| To start, we'll need something that we're allergic to. In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous, so let's start there. |
| In Portuguese, "I am allergic to peanuts." is Tenho alergia a amendoim. Tenho alergia a amendoim. |
| Let's break it down by syllable Te-nho a-ler-gi-a a a-men-do-im. |
| Now, let's hear it once again, Tenho alergia a amendoim. |
| The first word Tenho means "I have." Tenho. |

| This is followed by Alergia, which in English is "allergy." |

| Cultural Insights |
| As many of you know, allergies are serious. And if you have any kind of allergy, you should tell your host. Brazilians use LOTS of seasonings, oils, ingredients, natural colorings, herbs, and many other things and you would never know everything in a particular food without watching them make it. Brazilians don't use recipes to cook. So, asking them what is in the food isn't enough. They probably don't remember everything. You need to be polite but direct and say, "I have an allergy to," whatever. |
| For example, the northeastern part of Brazil has extremely peppered food. They don't use black pepper like they do in the United States, they actually put full hot peppers into the food while they are cooking. Together with nut oils, fish, and about 10 other things that don't even exist anywhere else in the world. |
| Like I said, Brazilians don't typically use recipes. So, if you have an allergy, it won't make that big of a difference in how they cook the food. They'll just leave that one thing out. Just be sure to tell them before they start cooking. |
