Hi everybody, here's Paloma! |
Welcome to Whiteboard lessons! |
Today we're going to talk about making small talk about the weather in Portuguese. |
Okay, so first of all, let's start with the vocabulary. |
First, we have... |
quente |
hot |
quente |
And the opposite is... |
frio |
cold |
The next on is... |
úmido |
humid |
And we also have |
chovendo |
raining |
We also have |
nevando |
"snowing" |
And, |
ensolarado |
"sunny" |
fresco |
fresco means "cool" |
And the last one is... |
ventando |
ventando means "windy" |
Okay, so let's see them in a dialogue. |
Here's the dialogue. |
Hoje está quente, né? |
É verdade. |
Hoje está quente, né? "It's hot today, isn't it?" |
É verdade. "That's true." |
Hoje está quente, né? |
É verdade. |
Let's see some more examples with the same pattern. |
Hoje está frio, né? "It's cold today, isn't it?" |
Hoje está fresco, né? "It's cool today, isn't it?" |
Hoje está chovendo, né? "It's raining today, isn't it?" |
You could also say... |
Hoje está chovendo... |
bastante "a lot" |
Hoje está chovendo bastante, né? |
Today is raining a lot, isn't it? |
Okay, so let's see the pattern. |
Hoje está [WEATHER CONDITION], né? |
It's [WEATHER CONDITION] today, isn't it? |
Hoje means "today" |
está means "is" |
Today is [WEATHER CONDITION] |
né? "isn't it?" |
You could also make it just a statement by saying, |
Está [WEATHER CONDITION]. |
For example, |
Está quente. "It's hot." |
Está ensolarado. "It's sunny." |
Está úmido. "It's humid." |
But you can also use |
Hoje está ventando, né? |
So since we're talking about the weather, |
you should know that in Brazil you almost |
never going to use this last one - nevando "snowing" |
because we almost never see snow in Brazil. |
You're probably almost always going to use |
quente "hot" and "humid," úmido; |
and it also rains a lot, chovendo "raining." |
So prepare to get a really nice tan when you go to Brazil. |
