| Braden: In this lesson, we'll explain the difference between the prepositions por and para. |
| Thássia: Where does this conversation take place and who is it between? |
| Braden: This conversation takes place in the afternoon at a mechanic shop after the car accident. |
| Thássia: What's the formality level? |
| Braden: Well, this one is interesting because it starts formal then moves to informal. |
| Thássia: Let's listen to the conversation. |

| Sérgio: Boa tarde, eu vim buscar o Porsche Vermelho. Já está pronto? |
| Mecânico: Sim senhor! |

| Braden: As impossible as this might sound, I’ve had things like this happen to me in Brazil. It varies heavily by area region and person but deadlines – or the line that if you cross unprepared, you’re dead – are often just vague wishes. |
| Thássia: Oh gosh it IS true. Letters sent Next Day Air that took over a month to arrive, car repairs that take three week to happen... |
| Braden: I even heard about divorces that take a decade to resolve. |
| Thassia: It is such a pity that those inefficiencies were listed as a major obstacle to Brazil’s sustained growth over the next few years in a special issue of the Economist on Brazil. |
| Braden: yeah. From a positive perspective, if you are late for something, they probably don’t care they’re just glad you made it. |
| Thassia: You are right. But if it’s a business meeting, you’d better be on time. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Braden: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Thássia: We’ll start by looking at the difference between concerto and conserto. These words are pronounced the same but they have different meanings. Concerto written with “c” C-O-N-C-E-R-T-O means “concert.” And conserto written with “s” C-O-N-S-E-R-T-O means “mending” or “repair.” |
| Braden: Next we’ll look at “oficina.” |
| Thássia: Oficina has the general meaning of “place of work.” But most of the time, oficina means “place where things are fixed or repaired,” like a “car shop” or a “bike shop.” In the dialogue, oficina was used to mean “shop.” |
| Braden: Next we’ll look at "ficar chateado” Ficar chateado means “to get irritated.” This is a everyday expression used by everyone really. |
| Thássia: Ficar chateado can also be used as an euphemism for “to get mad.” The root word, chato, has two meanings, first “irritating” and second “flat.” |

| Thássia: Remember that the present progressive indicates an action that is currently taking place (Ele está sorrindo, Nós estamos falando, Você está lendo). |
| Braden: The past progressive indicates an action that was taking place when another action occurred. (I was sleeping when he entered the room). |
| Thássia: The past progressive is formed exactly as the present progressive except the verb estar is conjugated in the imperfect, not the preterit. |
| Braden: so the imperfect of estar is estava, estávamos, and estavam then you add on the participle you need. |
| Thássia: like the word, dormindo, or correndo. |
| Braden: to get Estava dormindo or estavamos correndo. |
| Thássia: Let’s look at some sample sentences so you can see the comparison |
