| In the last lesson, we learned how to ask "What" questions in Portuguese. |
| This time, we are going to ask questions using the interrogative word "Where?" |
| Imagine you want to ask where your friend is now. You will ask him Onde você está? This means "Where are you?" |

| So let’s break down this answer. |
| First we had- |
| Onde, which is the basic translation of "Where" in Portuguese. |
| Você means "you" |
| Finally está, which is "are", the 3rd person form of the verb estar which we have already studied. |
| So, altogether it is Onde você está?, "Where are you?" |
| So in Portuguese, "Where" is mainly translated as Onde. |
| For example, if you want to ask "Where do you live?" You will say Onde você mora? |
| Unlike English, the order of the sentence doesn’t change when you’re asking a question. |
| But be careful, because several combinations with Onde are possible in Portuguese. For example, if you want to ask "Where do you come from?" you will use De onde instead of just onde. |
| So that question in Portuguese is De onde você é? |

| The word onde also changes if you want to know the other person’s destination. If you say, for example, Para onde você vai? |
| This literally means "Where are you going to?" This interrogative formula Para onde is often used when asking about the final destination, for example, your final train station or highway exit. |
| When you want to talk about your itinerary, you can also hear Por onde which literally means "by where." |
| For example, you may hear Por onde você passa para ir a Curitiba? This means "Which cities do you pass to go to Curitiba?" |
| The grammatical rule for Onde, De onde, Para onde or Por onde remains the same - they all have to be followed by a subject and a verb. |
| Onde você está? here the verb is “to be” |
| De onde você vem? here the verb is "to come" |
| Para onde você vai? Here the verb is “to go” |
| Por onde você passa? Here the verb is “to pass” |
| Now it’s time for Paloma’s Points. |
| If the verb following the question gives an idea of movement, like the verb “to go”, you can also use the word Aonde. Aonde is the combination of the preposition a + onde. |
| For example, Aonde você foi ontem? |
| “Where did you go yesterday?” |

| - Onde is the basic "Where", as in "Where do you live?" Onde você mora? |
| - De onde is insisting on the origin or the starting point, as in "Where do you come from?" De onde você é? |
| - Para onde is insisting on the destination or arrival point, as in "Where are you going to?" Para onde você vai? |
| - Por onde is focusing on the itinerary, on the desired route, as in Por onde você vai passar? |
