Oi, meu nome é Paloma. Hi everybody! I’m Paloma. |
Welcome to PortuguesePod101.com’s “Português em Três Minutos”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Portuguese. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb ir which means "to go" in Portuguese. |
In this lesson, we will continue our series dedicated to very common Portuguese verbs. |
The second verb in our series is fazer, which means "to do." But as in English, you’ll see that the meaning of this verb is quite broad and it can be found in many different situations. |
So imagine someone asks you O que você está fazendo? |
That means "What are you doing?" |
So, if you are doing your homework, for example, you will say Eu estou fazendo lição de casa. |
So let’s break down this answer. |
First we had- |
Eu estou which is "I am" |
Fazendo is the verb fazer, which is "doing". |
Finally we had lição de casa, which is a noun and means "homework." |
[slowly] Eu estou fazendo lição de casa. |
So now, let’s have a broader look at what you can say with this verb fazer in Portuguese. |
It might be the most useful verb in Portuguese, since you say almost everything with it! |
It can mean "to do" as we saw just before, but it can also stand for "to make" or "to create" in English, as in Eu faço as minhas próprias roupas. which is "I make my own clothes" or Eu estou fazendo um bolo which is "I’m making a cake." |
It can also be used with nouns to replace a verb, for example "to buy", is “comprar”, but can be replaced by “fazer compras”, as in Eu estou fazendo compras which is "I’m shopping." Or “to clean”, that is “limpar” in Portuguese, can be substituted by “fazer limpeza”, as in Eu estou fazendo limpeza which is "I’m cleaning." |
Now it’s time for Paloma’s Points. |
If you like discounts, this tip is for you! |
Fazer can also mean to change the price of a product, making it cheaper in a bargain. For example, the saleswoman may say to you- |
Se você levar 3 camisetas, eu faço por 50 reais. |
“If you buy 3 t-shirts, I will make it 50 reales.” |
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb fazer in many different contexts and I’m sure it will help you a lot! |
Next time we’ll learn another very useful and romantic verb, amar. |
Do you know what this Portuguese verb means? You might have an idea! |
