Braden: Hello, and welcome to PortuguesePOD101.com, where we study modern Portuguese in a fun, educational format! |
Sílvia: So, brush up on the Portuguese that you started learning long ago, or start learning today. |
Braden: Thanks for being here with us for this lesson, Sílvia, what are we looking at in this lesson? |
Camila: So Braden, please tell us what we'll be learning in this lesson. |
Braden: In this lesson, we'll be learning reading |
Camila: Where does this conversation take place and who is it between? |
Braden: This conversation takes place in the evening, at home, and it's not really between anyone because it's someone reading an extended warranty. |
Camila: What's the formality level? |
Braden: Well, it's formal. |
Camila: Let's listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly. |

Narrador: A garantia estendida é um tipo de seguro para produtos de consumo, como eletrodomésticos, eletroportáteis, equipamentos eletrônicos, móveis, celulares, entre outros. |
Braden: The "Extended Guarantee" is a type of security for consumer products, such as appliances, portable electronics, electronic equipment, furniture, cellular phones, among others. |
Braden: This type of security covers the product's manufacturing defects, and begins after the manufacturer's warranty ends. |
Narrador: Esse tipo de seguro cobre os defeitos de fabricação do produto e começa a valer a partir do vencimento da garantia do fabricante. |
Braden: The "Extended Guarantee" warranty also covers parts and labor costs necessary for the repair of your product. |
Braden: In this way, the Extended Guarantee becomes a necessary protection for all of your consumer products. |
Narrador: O seguro Garantia Estendida cobre ainda os custos de mão de obra e reposição de peças ou componentes necessários para o conserto do seu produto. |
Braden: This warranty does not cover the use of the product while within a vacuum. |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Braden: (ask --- something about the dialogue-Peter always does a little review about the previous lessons. explain what you are thinking about the storyline in the lesson, so the students can follow and participate - don't make them guess.) |
---: response |
Extended Warranties |
Braden: I don't know about most of our listeners but except for Apple computers, I never bothered to purchase the extended warranty on anything. Instead I would purposefully look for the nicer and higher quality products knowing that the wouldn't break or make sure it was something that was so cheap I didn't care that it broke. |
---: Living in Brazil has changed that view? |
Braden: Yes a bit. Appliances and electronics tend to break very quickly in Brazil, even from big names like Samsung, Bosch, and GE. |
---: And often in ways that just happen to not be covered by the warranty. |
Braden: Exactly. Beyond that, even if your product happens to still be in the original manufacturer's warranty, unless you've purchased the extended warranty customer service seems to magically not have any power to help you. |
---: Beyond that, parts tend to be nearly three times what they are in the US so a leaking washer drum or a flat screen that won't turn on probably costs almost twice as much to fix as it does to just get a new one. |
Braden: (how about you?) |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Braden: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
---: The first word we'll look at is moveis. |
Braden: moveis literally translates to "movables" but it means "furniture." Moveis is easily compared to the word imoveis which literally translates to "imovables" but it typically refers to buildings. |
---: The comparison being that imoveis are stationary (buildings) and moveis are not (couches.) Moveis is spelled the same way as movies except you reverse the "e" and the "i." |
Braden: Could you break this down? |
---: (break down) |
Braden: what's our next word? |
---: The next word we'll look at is seguro |
Braden: seguro frequently translates to "secure" but it can also mean "security," "safe," "security guard," or "insurance." |
Braden: Could you break this down? |
---: (break down) |
Braden: what's our next word? |
---: The next word we'll look at is Vácuo |
Braden: vácuo literally translates to "vacuum" but it does not (ever) mean "vacuum cleaner." |
---: Vácuo can mean "empty," "vacuum or vacuity," or "void." |
Braden: Random, side comment about the word breu which means extreme blackness, and could translate as "pitch black." Unrelated, it's also a type of yellow rock. |
Braden: Could you break this down? |
---: (break down) |
Braden: what's our next phrase? |
---: The next phrase we'll look at is mão de obra |
Braden: mão de obra literally translates to "hand of work" but it means "labor" or "manual labor." |
---: The phrase labor manual means nothing in Portuguese. |
Lesson focus
|
Braden: So ---, what's the focus of this lesson? |
---: The focus of this lesson is equivalents of "to become" In the dialogue, we heard the phrase Assim, a Garantia Estendia se torna uma proteção necessária para todos os seus produtos de bem de consumo. |
Braden: Which we translated as "In this way, the Extended Guarantee becomes a necessary protection for all of your consumer products." |
---: There are three words in Portuguese that can have the meaning of "to become." Ficar, tornar-se, and fazer-se. |
Braden: First we'll look at the verb ficar |
---: In addition to other meanings which are to stay, to remain, to be located ficar means to become, or "to get," if the action is reactionary. |
Braden: Could you give us some examples? |
---: Sure. Some examples are Ela ficou nervosa. Which means "She got mad." and Eles ficaram furiosos. which means "They became furious." |
Braden: And how about one that doesn't involve an emotion? |
---: Okay, how about "João ficou inválido." which means "João became an invalid." |
Braden: Excellent. Here ficar is used because João probably didn't want to become an invalid. |
---: Next we'll look at the verb tornar-se. |
Braden: Tornar-se also means to become, but often it's because the person(s) in question wanted to become the way it turned out. |
---: For example, the phrase Ele se tornoun o homem mais famoso da cidade. means "He became the most famous man from the city." and the sentence Ela se tornou muito amável. means "She became very lovable." |
Braden: and one more for good measure. |
---: Sure Nós nos tornamos bem estudiosos. which literally translates to "we became very studyful." but it means "We studied very hard." |
Braden: it can also be applied to objects |
---: That's right. For example, Paris se tornou o centro da moda feminina. means "Paris became the center of feminine fashion." |
Braden: Okay so what are we going to look at last? |
---: The last verb that can mean to become is the verb fazer-se. Fazer-se means to become when referring to one's occupation or when it comes before rico. |
Braden: Could you give us some examples? |
---: Sure. The sentence Ele se fez mecânico. means "He became a mechanic." and Elas se fizeram professoras. means "They became teachers." |
Braden: Now, in these examples, they probably wanted to become each of these things so you could use tornar-se here. |
---: But the reality is we just don't. We use fazer-se. |
Braden: How about one last example? |
---: Sure. O meu irmão quer se fazer rico. Which translates to "My brother wants to become rich." |
