Olá, PortuguesePod101 listeners! Do you have an air conditioner at home? Do most people have them where you live? If not, what do you do to stay cool? Leave us a cool comment and share your tips!

Tem si. Eu moro na praia do Ecuador. A maioria das pessoas não têm ar condicionado porque é muito caro. As casas estão ventiladas.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for posting.

In this specific case it sounds more natural to use "foram".

However, we use "estava" (was) in some cases, for example: "Estava muito calor ontem." ("It was very hot yesterday.")

Looking forward to seeing you often here.

Sincerely,

Cristiane

Essas últimas duas semanas foram muito quentes.

Could estava or foi be used instead of foram?

Hi Chris,

Thank you for posting.

These structures are commonly used in casual conversations and the verb "voltar" is used in the present tense although we're talking about future actions. Please consider this as a special case.

Sincerely,

Cristiane

Eu volto mais tarde.

"I'll come back later."

Eles voltam às quatro horas.

"They'll return at four o'clock."

I dont understand how these verb forms of voltar can be correct, as they are both referring to the future,

shouldnt they be for example, eu vou voltar, or eles voltarao?

Oi Larry,

I think you mean "foram" right?

"foram" is a form of the verb "ser", to be.

It's the verb "ser" in the past plural form, so the literal translation in English would be "were".

I hope it helps!

Let us know if you have any question!

In second sentence FARAM, is translated as WERE. FARAM is from what infinitive

verb. I can not seem to find a translation for the verb FARAR. Also since it is translated as WERE , should it not be in the preterite.

Oi Momoko,

Nós também temos no Brasil, e chamamos de "leque". But they are mostly used by old ladies.

But you're right, during a hot summer, only a "leque" won't be enough! :sunglasses:

Você usa leque?

To use electric fans is popular in Brazil?

We have paper fans (some are foldable and portable)

and they are eco-frinendly but it's hard to

get through a hot summer only with them!

Oi Dan,

Yes, most houses don't have AC in Brazil, right?

A good tip is to run away to Nordeste during cold days in São Paulo!

It might be still cold yet, but soon a primavera (Spring) will start, with a very nice climate

We live in São Paulo now, and I am cold a lot more than I am hot...we don't have AC, but we use small electric heaters in the bedroom sometimes when it gets cold...the climate (in city of SP) is more varied and almost temperate sometimes because of the altitude and prevailing winds.
